    Level II of Medical Assisting-500 hours

    • 30 hours Basic Nutrition
    • 90 hours Medical Assisting I
    • 90 hours Medical Assisting II
    • 48 hours Pharmacology
    • 78 hours Medical Laboratory Techniques
    • 44 hours Medical Emergencies
    • 120 hours Practicum (clinical)

    Credential Potential

    Upon completion of the program, the student receives a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to sit for the following certifications: National Certification of Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA) and the National Certification for Medical Assisting (NCMA).

    Basic Nutrition

    30 Clock hours

    This course serves as an Introduction to Nutrition. The course stresses characteristics of nutrients and their food sources. Digestion, absorption and metabolism are examined as they relate to   normal functions of the human body. Individualized diet plans and current diet topics will be discussed.

    Medical Assisting I

    90 Clock hours (66 theory hours/24 lab hours)

    Medical Assisting I is an introductory course to clinical skills performed in medical offices. Emphasis is placed on asepsis, infection control, OSHA standards, gathering information for a health history, performing physical examinations and assessments, performing vital signs, and recognizing common diseases and conditions. Students practice learned skills in skills lab.

    Medical Assisting II

    90 clock hours (66 theory hours/24 lab hours)

    Medical Assisting II provides continued instruction in advanced level clinical skills performed in medical offices. The course emphasizes instruction of assisting with assessment in specialty areas such as eye and ear, gynecologic, pediatric, minor office surgical procedures, administration of medications including subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal injections and cardiopulmonary procedures including electrocardiograms (EKG) and pulmonary function tests. Students practice advanced level skills in skills lab.

    Medical Laboratory Techniques

    78 clock hours (66 theory hours/12 lab hours)

    Medical Laboratory Techniques is an introduction to quality control, specimen collection, and analysis. Included is urinalysis, hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and immunology procedures and testing. The course reviews regulatory guidelines including OSHA and CLIA standards. Students practice skills needed to perform many laboratory tests common to a medical office.

    Medical Emergencies

    44 clock hours (36 theory hours/8 lab hours)

    This course is designed to teach the student to manage a medical/trauma emergency until EMS personnel arrive. Emphasis is placed on victim/patient stabilization using supplies available to the layperson. BLS is included.

    Pharmacology

    48 clock hours (42 theory hours/6 lab hours)

    This introductory level of pharmacology offers an introduction to the study of drugs, including mechanisms of actions, therapeutic effects, and their role in treating disease. The student will learn injection methods and acceptable sites for injections as well as dosage calculations.

    Practicum

    120 clock hours

    The Practicum offers 120 hours of supervised learning experience in Medical Assisting. It is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to obtain technical and hands-on experience under the supervision of a competent practitioner. Included is experience in phlebotomy, cardiology (EKGs) and medication administration in clinical medical offices.

    Upon entrance to the program the following will be required: a BCI and FBI background check and a drug screen must be taken (a felony or positive drug screen can prevent the student from continuing in the program).
