Students from the Buckeye Hills Chapter of SkillsUSA recently helped the local Board of Elections on Tuesday March 4, 2008. The students helped return the voting machines and with inventory control. The SkillsUSA members worked at the Gallia County BOE and Jackson County BOE. In Gallia County, the students were assisted by the Boy Scouts of Troop 200. Brittany Gilbert, Chapter President, and Sean Maynard, Chapter Treasurer, helped check in all equipment and move it to a secure location. Amanda Henderson, Chapter Vice President, and Hanna Leach, Junior Officer, helped in Jackson County inventorying the bags and equipment as they were checked in by the BOE staff.
The student’s also registered new voters at Buckeye Hills Career Center. They broke into teams and spent three days traveling to the academic classes to register new voters. Through their efforts, they were able to register 110 new voters. The students hoped to lay down the groundwork for the program to be continued in the coming years. They also plan to complete an informational power point presentation that can be used next year before the general election. The power point will consist of facts and policy as it relates to the candidates for President.
The students are doing a project for the Patriotism and Citizenship section of the American Spirit book. The students have to complete three sections that include Patriotism and Citizenship, Community Service, and Promotion of Career Technical Education.
