RIO GRANDE - The Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Joint Vocational School District was recently named the October 2007 Gallia County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month by the chamber's Promotions Committee.
The award-winning Buckeye Hills Career Center serves six participating school districts: Gallia County Local Schools, Gallipolis City Schools, Jackson City Schools, Oak Hill Union Local Schools, Vinton County Local Schools and Wellston City Schools.
Buckeye Hills offers a wide variety of career technical programs. Through classroom instruction, hands-on training and cooperative work experience, students acquire the skills to enter the workforce or the necessary prerequisites for additional technical or academic training beyond high school, including industry-based credentials.
Students at Buckeye Hills have the opportunity to participate in youth activities at the local, state and national level. Through the youth organizations, students can develop and strengthen leadership skills and other characteristics which will assist them and society in the world of work. The National Honor Society, National Vocational Technical Honor Society and Buckeye Backers are some of the organizations which foster good citizenship, high academics and cooperative efforts.
Buckeye Hills gives students a chance to build a Career Passport, which provides employers a viable means to assess academic and technical skills of program completers. The Career Passport includes a cover letter, personal data sheet, summary of community service, educational goals, competency profile, high school diploma, school transcript and any license or certificate the student has earned.
The Office of Student Services coordinates activities, offers counseling services and provides information and support to all students needing assistance.
Programs offered to students include Architectural Computer, Aided Drafting, Auto Service Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Prep, IT Tech Prep, Diversified Health Occupations, Public Safety and Welding.
The Buckeye Hills Adult Center for Lifelong Learning offers both short- and long-term comprehensive career-technical programs designed for those who seek to enter an occupation, upgrade their skills in their present occupation, or explore a new area.
The Ohio Department of Education has recognized the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Joint Vocational School District as a full service center which provides to all area residents, business and industry a cost-efficient, educationally sound way to train and upgrade the skills of the area workforce. The full service center offers the latest equipment and technologies and provides training under the direction of skilled instructors.
They have a very high adult passage rate, and an astounding 100 percent passage rate in the Practical Nursing Program. Other programs include EMT training, which provides a nationally recognized certificate, Level 2 Firefighter Certification, state licensed cosmetology program, police, construction and welding programs, all with industry based credentials. Adult students also receive a Career Passport. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
The building program constructs a modular home every year and auctions it off, with the proceeds going directly back into the program. They build components for Habitat For Humanity houses, and the heating/cooling program installs components for Habitat For Humanity in an effort to help the community.
